About the Musical

Matilda Jr.

Matilda JR. is a musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel. It follows Matilda, a brilliant, witty girl with a vivid imagination—and a surprising telekinetic gift. Though she is overlooked and mistreated by her parents, she soon forms a special bond with her kind and compassionate teacher, Miss Honey.

School, however, is far from easy. Headmistress Agatha Trunchbull rules with fear and punishment, but Matilda refuses to be intimidated. With courage and cleverness, she inspires her classmates and the adults around her to challenge injustice and stand up for what is right.

Filled with high-energy choreography and unforgettable songs, Matilda JR. promises joy, laughter and heart for both performers and audiences.

Why This Story Matters to Us

Although Matilda’s story is fictional, it invites us to reflect on how we treat one another and the importance of standing up against wrongdoing. While Matilda experiences unkindness at home, we remember the ultimate example of love and grace in God’s kindness to us through Christ:

“He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.” — Titus 3:5

Like Matilda, we sometimes feel the weight of injustice. Yet these moments point us to the hope we have in Christ, who forgives us, restores us, and promises to make all things right. His example encourages us to forgive, love generously, and act with compassion.

Matilda boldly declares, “Even if you’re little, you can do a lot!” The Bible echoes this encouragement:

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example… in love, in faith and in purity.” — 1 Timothy 4:12

As our students rehearse, sing and tell Matilda’s story, they remind us all of the impact even the youngest among us can have. Creativity, humility, bravery and a heart for justice reflect the way Jesus calls us to treat others—with dignity, kindness, and courage.
